The Judge – Round 14 – The best ever…?

There was a lot of talk earlier in the season about Natas and their quest to break the all time consecutive wins record, but that talk has overshadowed what could actually be the most dominant team in AFR history. You may recall a Judge article in round 3 where I labelled the Super League the more competitive and better league. And while Natas was attempting (and failing) to break an Original League record by beating a bunch of second rate teams run by managers with selection philosophies stuck in the early 2000’s, there has been a team in the Super League that is quietly marching its way into the history books.

The Sons of God are currently sitting on top of the Super League table with a record of 12-2. But since round 4 this year they are undefeated. That’s a winning streak of 10 in a row. The all time record for the Super League is only 13 consecutive wins. They will equal this record if they win the next 3 games and then will break it if they can beat Nexus in round 18 in a top of the table showdown that suddenly might have more at stake than just top spot on the ladder. (Of course if they hadn’t lost to the bottom of the ladder Major Warriors in round 4 they already would have equalled the record but Natas’ streak was broken by a similarly unexpected loss as well)

If the Sons can win 4 more games in a row they will become the most dominant team in Super League history, and seeing as how the Super League is the better league, that will make them the GREATEST TEAM EVER in the history of the AFR.

Charlie Curnow has been a Superstar for the Sons this year, and Matt Rowell’s unexpectedly turning into the best tagger in the competition has surprised everyone but Ben. The improvement in those two players alone is worth about 15 points per game on average to the Sons. And you do wonder just what type of scores they would be putting up if Ben King hadn’t gone done with a season ending knee injury. However… Tom Stewart has just been suspended until AFR finals and they are lacking depth at ruck and forward so may be susceptible to injuries in those areas of the field.

But the real scary thing is wondering how this team is going to go next year… If they manage to remain unbeaten until the end of the season and start next year with a non suspended Stewart, and a rehabilitated King, could we see the first ever undefeated entire season in AFR history in 2023 from the Sons? Just how many games can they win in a row… 30… 40…

Judge’s Verdict – The Sons are the real deal.
